The Member of Parliament for Lambussie, Hon. Titus Kofi Beyuo, has called for greater public education and stronger healthcare support to help reduce maternal deaths caused by preeclampsia in Ghana.
Speaking in Parliament to commemorate World Preeclampsia Day 2026, Hon. Prof. Beyuo described preeclampsia as one of the major causes of maternal mortality both in Ghana and globally. Referring to this year’s theme, “Know Her Symptoms,” he stressed the importance of increasing awareness about the condition and encouraging communities to support pregnant women.
He explained that preeclampsia is a pregnancy-related complication associated with high blood pressure and can severely affect vital organs including the liver, kidneys, and brain. According to him, if the condition is not detected and treated early, it can lead to serious complications such as convulsions, premature birth, and even death.
Prof. Beyuo further revealed that preeclampsia affects nearly 10 million pregnancies worldwide every year and remains a significant contributor to maternal deaths, particularly in low- and middle-income countries such as Ghana.
He therefore encouraged pregnant women to attend regular antenatal clinics and adhere to medical advice to ensure early diagnosis and proper treatment. He also appealed to the Ministry of Health to strengthen healthcare facilities by improving access to blood pressure monitors, essential medicines, and diagnostic equipment across the country.
