Kumasi, Ghana — June 18, 2026
A night of celebration for Ghanaian football fans has turned into a moment of national mourning following the tragic death of a young lawyer who reportedly collapsed while celebrating Ghana’s World Cup victory over Panama.
Sara Araba Tettey, a 26-year-old private legal practitioner, is reported to have suffered a cardiac arrest during jubilations after Ghana’s victory on Wednesday night.
According to reports, Ms. Tettey was watching the match with friends at Standard Hostel, a private student hostel located at Bomso near the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.
Witnesses say the young lawyer suddenly collapsed during the celebrations that followed Ghana’s victory. Friends immediately rushed her to the KNUST Hospital, popularly known as Tech Hospital, where medical personnel reportedly administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for approximately 45 minutes in an effort to save her life.
Despite the medical team’s efforts, she was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
The news has sent shockwaves through the legal community, particularly among former colleagues, classmates, and members of the KNUST Faculty of Law.
Sara Araba Tettey was a respected young professional who had only recently begun her legal career. A graduate of the KNUST Faculty of Law, she was called to the Ghana Bar in October 2025 and was practicing with O & A Legal Consult.
Friends and colleagues have described her as dedicated, intelligent, and full of promise, making her sudden passing even more difficult for those who knew her.
Her death serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly life can change, even during moments of joy and celebration. While football continues to unite millions of people and create unforgettable memories, this tragedy has highlighted the fragility of life and the importance of health awareness during emotionally intense events.
As tributes continue to pour in from the legal fraternity and the wider public, many are remembering a young woman whose future appeared bright and whose life ended far too soon.
Her body has reportedly been deposited at the KNUST Medical School Mortuary pending further arrangements.
The thoughts and prayers of many Ghanaians remain with her family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
